Artist Spotlight: Alex Albrecht

February has seen Anjunadeep dive deep into all things down under. We hosted three spectacular shows in Australia and released five stunning new tracks from Melbourne/Naarm-based producer, live act and founder of independent label Analogue Attic Alex Albrecht

In the wake of his five-track ‘Someday, Sara' EP we chatted to Alex about personal inspirations, trusting the process and ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’.

Hey Alex! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I write music with a focus on atmospheric, textured sounds that blend electronic and organic elements. I’m inspired by jazz and ambient music and play piano, which has shaped the way I approach composition and improvisation. I started out experimenting with production as a teenager, gradually refining my style and developing a love for deep, immersive soundscapes. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to release lots of music through my label, Analogue Attic and others, as well as collaborate on projects that explore a sense of place, nature, and mood.

We found your production process extremely interesting when signing the project. Could you tell us a bit more about how you make music?

My approach is very textural—I like to blend field recordings, acoustic instruments, and synthesizers to create immersive sonic environments. I often start with a mood or setting in mind, sometimes drawing from nature or specific locations. From there, I layer different elements, letting the piece evolve organically. A lot of my music features recorded instruments like piano and guitar, but I also enjoy manipulating those sounds digitally to create something new.

How do you stay creatively inspired?

I get a lot of inspiration from my surroundings—whether it’s the Australian landscape, urban environments, or even memories of places I’ve been. Travel, film, and literature also play a role in shaping ideas. Sometimes, stepping away from music and working on something visual or tactile, like painting or photography, helps reset my creativity.

What’s something fans might not know about you?

When I’m not making music, I take my mind off things and recharge by surfing and mountain biking. Being out in nature, whether in the ocean or on a trail, helps clear my head and gives me a fresh perspective when I return to the studio.

Is there anyone you look up to in music or are particularly inspired by?

Terre Thaemlitz is someone I really look up to. Their ability to create incredible dance and ambient music, full of texture and deeper meaning, is something that has resonated with me for years. They have a way of making music that feels both deeply personal and socially aware, which is something I strive for in my own work.

Have you received any advice that’s stuck with you throughout your career?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is to trust the process and not rush creativity. Some of the best ideas take time to form, and sometimes stepping away from a piece for a while when you're not feeling inspired allows you to come back with fresh ears and a new perspective.

Tell us about the 'Someday, Sara' project…

'Someday, Sara' came to me while I was traveling through Sri Lanka. I was reflecting on the idea of mystery and nostalgia and decided to weave in small elements inspired by 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', the iconic Australian film. You might hear little moments throughout the record that nod to its dreamlike and eerie atmosphere. It’s hard to pick a favourite track, but I think the title track resonates with me the most. The hardest track to finish was probably 'Cloud Perch' —it went through multiple iterations before I found the right balance.

What’s next for Alex Albrecht now that the new record is out?

I’ve got some exciting live shows coming up—I'll be playing some great shows in Melbourne before heading to Japan in May then back to Europe in June for an extended tour. There are some upcoming collaborations in the works as well, and I’m always experimenting with new sounds and ideas for future releases.
