Brainsugar (10 Year Anniversary Edition)

Originally released in 2016, 'Brainsugar' is Cubicolor’s debut album and the project that brought the band together.

Looking back on the album, Tim shares: “I remember going to Amsterdam for the first-ever studio session. I’d never met Peter and Ariaan before, and it was my first time on the boat – at that time, it was full of cats! We wrote ‘Fictionalise’ maybe an hour after meeting. The next morning, Peter and I were playing, and ‘Nights in Bloom’ was written there and then. That afternoon, we started working on ‘Mirror Play’. For me, the album is the sound of us getting to know each other, as though we were meeting through music. I came back over the next few weekends and the whole album was written then – although with a lot of work after that!  I’ve never had a musical experience like it, where it felt so easy and free, and somehow we already had an understanding of each other. The album was a gift to us, as we’d go on to spend so much time together writing on the boat for years. We’re so happy to celebrate it with the world again.”

Across 'Brainsugar', Cubicolor’s sound unfolds through a diverse and infectious collection of tracks, pairing beautiful songwriting with a cohesive clarity that echoes influences such as Radiohead, Massive Attack and Moderat. Tim’s lyrical depth and haunting vocal style shine throughout the album, which features eight vocal tracks and four instrumentals.

Lead single ‘Falling’ has become one of the most sought-after tracks in Anjunadeep’s catalogue. A cascading piece of melancholic house, it received wide support across UK and international radio, including BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, KCRW, KEXP, SiriusXM Chill, 1Live, Rai 2, 3FM and Studio Brussel. Other standout moments include ‘Fictionalise’, ‘Dead End Thrills’ and ‘Machine Keys’.

'Brainsugar' also marked the beginning of a lasting relationship between Cubicolor and Anjuna, and the album has remained a firm favourite over the years. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, we’re pressing an expanded edition featuring all the original tracks alongside some of the band’s favourite reworks from iconic DJs and producers Patrice Bäumel, Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas and Robag Wruhme.
