Artist Spotlight: Sebastian Sellares

In the wake of his new 'Timeless Era EP' which landed on the label earlier this month, we sat down with Argentinian producer Sebastian Sellares and asked him a few questions about inspiration, introversion and the new release...

Hey Sebastian! For anyone who's not yet familiar with you, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi guys, hope you're doing well! I'm a Progressive House producer and DJ from Córdoba, Argentina, and I first got into music as a child listening to rock, metal and pop-rock from the '80s.

I started to get into electronic music when I was around 11 years old. I've known Daft Punk and Depeche Mode since I was little, and then discovered artists like deadmau5, Skrillex and Pendulum thanks to my brother.

When I was 17 I started to get into the world of music production and eventually decided to make progressive house. I put out my first release by the start of 2017, when I was just shy of 19, under the alias of 'Monje' which is my mother's last name. From then on I just kept producing and working with different labels and artists until where I am today.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Currently my inspirations lie mostly between artists in progressive house like Hernán Cattáneo, Guy J and John Digweed. I've also always been inspired by artists outside the genre like Madeon and EDEN.

How do you stay creatively inspired?

This is something I struggle with a lot. The idea of creating something new, something that hasn't been done yet pushes me to be creative. Trying to create a track from a single idea works a lot, and trying to make music regularly also works for staying inspired.

Is there a particular piece of advice that has stuck with you throughout your career?

There is not a specific piece of advice that stuck with me. But I've developed ways of thought that helped me push my work. Mostly, have fun. There's no point in doing anything that you're supposed to be enjoying it, without having fun with it.

What’s something fans might not know about you?

Probably how much of an introvert I am. I've always preferred staying at home or doing chill stuff rather than going out partying. Even as a DJ and producer I enjoy a lot more the producing side of it.

Tell us about the Timeless Era EP… What’s your favourite track on the EP and which was the most challenging to finish?

Tough choice. All three tracks are something I love, each one has it's little thing that makes me love them....

'Timeless Era' has its two main synth lines and reese bass melody I really like. My favourite part of 'Event Horizon' has to be the kalimbas and the "housier" feel it has. And 'Velvet Eyed Girl' has the piano and strings section in the breakdown which I absolutely adore.

I feel like 'Velvet Eyed Girl' is probably the one I like the most, but it's close!

'Event Horizon' was the one I struggled with the most. It needed to have a complete revision of what it originally was to make it work, and it took some time.

What’s next for Sebastian Sellares now the new EP is out?

There's still more music coming in in the next few weeks and months - two remixes to be precise. Besides that, the only thing that there's left to do is work on more new music. I've been thinking for a couple of months to work on an album, but it's still just a side thought.
